ESG Active Archival Storage TCO At-a-Glance:
Selecting and implementing technologies for deep and active digital
archives has historically been a choice between tape and optical solutions.
Content addressed systems that are based on commodity disk drives have
recently become available as an alternative. The Enterprise Strategy
Group (ESG) "Active Archival Storage TCO" provides a third party analysis
regarding the cost of acquisition and ownership of available archival
technologies - including tape, optical, and disk-based. The analysis
is based on the actual case study of a financial services firm shopping
for a 12 TB archive solution. The organization needed to archive 8 GB
of new data and manage 2,500 queries daily. The cost of acquisition
and ownership was measured over 3 years of operation. Only true quantifiable
list prices were included in this study to avoid the effects of subjective
interpretation.

The Active Archival Storage TCO provides readers with a
reasonable starting point for the cost comparison of archival technologies
available on the market today. ESG believes that the methodology and results
presented in this report form a valid relative comparison of the most
